Hot Spare
Hot spare disks are standby hard disks that can repair a degraded RAID Group by automatically replacing a failed disk. Hot spare disks can be globally assigned to repair any RAID Group within your DiskStation. A hot spare disk can only repair a RAID Group that meets the following criteria:
- The RAID type of the RAID Group must be one with data protection (i.e. RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10).
- The hard drive type of the hot spare disk must be the same as the RAID Group member disks (i.e. SATA, SAS).
- The hot spare disk size must be equal to or larger than the size of the smallest disk in the RAID Group.
To manage hot spare disks:
- Click Manage.
- To assign a hot spare disk, find the section Available Disks on the right side, and tick the box next to the disk you wish to assign as a hot spare. To remove a hot spare disk, leave the same box. Click
Apply to save settings.
Note:
When a hot spare disk repairs a degraded RAID Group, all data on the hot spare disk will be erased. Before assigning a hot spare disk, make sure the disk has no important data on it.
