Restore
Go to Backup & Replication > Restore to restore backup data.
To restore a backup task:
- Select a backup task and then click Restore. If the task is multi-version backup, please select Restore > Entire task.
- You may be prompted to select system configuration, different versions of backup data, or more. It depends on whether this is a data backup task, LUN backup task*, single-version backup destination (i.e. shared folder), or multi-version backup destination (i.e. volume).
- Follow the wizard to complete the setup.
- Select a backup task and then click Restore.

Note:
- Restoration for certain applications is supported. To see whether a specific package supports restoration, and its limitations, please refer to the help of each application.
- When restoring a package, if the package is not installed, the system will automatically install the same or latest version of the application. If the application is installed, but it is a version that is older than the backed up one, the system will automatically upgrade it to the original backed up version.
- Applications backed up in DSM 5.1 or above can not be restored in DSM 5.0 or below.
Note:
- After the restore is complete, a backup LUN will be restored to a file-based LUN at the selected destination volume.*

To restore a single file or folder for multi-version backup task:
- Launch File Version Browser. You can do this with either of the methods below:
- Click Restore and select Individual files/folders from the drop down menu.
- Go to Backup Destination and expand your selected backup destination. Click on the Backup Version Information icon. In the window that appears, select the backup version you want to restore and click the File Version Browser icon.
- You can browse the versions of a file or folder you want by using the timeline or the calendar icon on the bottom of the screen.
- Select the version you want to manage and click the Restore.
- Alternatively, you can copy a file or folder to another location, or download it using the Copy to... or Download button.
- You can also right click on the file or folder and select these options from the drop down menu.
To search for a specific version:
- Click the arrow in the filter bar on the top right hand corner.
- In the drop down menu, you can filter files by:
- Keyword: Enter the name of any file or folder. You can use wildcards [*] (representing one or more characters) and [?] (representing one random character) in your keywords. For example, [a*n] can represent [action], [attention], or [an].
- File Type: in the drop down menu you can choose from Any, Any Folder,or Any File to narrow down your search.
- Size: choose Any, or select equals, is greater than, is less than and then enter a value.
- Date Range: choose from Today, Yesterday, Last week, or Last month or Customize to enter a start and end date to find versions within a specific range.
- To apply your filters, click Filter.
- To reset your filtered search, click the Reset button.
Note:
- Only multi-version backup tasks provide the File Version Browser function.
- File Version Browser has only partial functions in DSM 5.1 or below.
- System configuration and applications can only restored via Restore > Entire task.
- Metadata will not be included in Copy to... and Download actions.
To restore backup tasks from other backup destination:
- Click Restore from....
- Choose any of the following to locate the backup task, and click Next:
- Local restoration: Choose this option to restore data from a local shared folder or an external disk.
- Network restoration: Choose this option to restore data from another DiskStation or rsync-compatible server.
- Public cloud service restoration: Choose this option to restore data from a public cloud server.
- When prompted, select the source where the backup task is kept, and then select the destination to restore the data.
- Follow the wizard to complete.
Note:
- Embedded DataStation can only restore shared folders to ext3/ext4 external devices.
- Embedded DataStation does not support application restoration without an ext3/ext4 external device.
